Hello,

I am trying to install openwrt on a brand new asus N10U . According to wiki , is supported by openwrt. However, i am trying to use the image
http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_a … uashfs.trx

Every time i try to upload it using the web interface the default ASUS software has it, it refuses , saying that the software i am trying to upload is not correct. I tried with a DD-wrt image and that one worked (however i am a openwrt fan) - this means asus is not checking to be their firmware only, rather is some mismatch on the image i am trying to use.

Any ideea/clues ? The Asus router i am using is the black model.

I also tried in rescue mode , but that didn't worked neither.

Can you try version from trunk? I don't really want to waste time looking for an issue that is already solved wink

If trunk (snapshot) version also doesn't work, let me know, I'll try to fix this.

Hello Zajec

I tried previously the version from snapshots/trunk . However, to make sure i tried it again few moments ago. The result is the same. Asus firmware says "Firmware upgrade unsuccessfully. It may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again."

Just to be clear, i used now on this test the following image:
http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … uashfs.trx

[cage@anubis Download]$ md5sum openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
b471c6127073e726b33abc91683ae43e  openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx
[cage@anubis Download]$ md5sum openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs\(1\).trx
e7fa4ebee7a47a949aacbe26f5d9de79  openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs(1).trx

this second one (with "(1)" ) is the version from snapshots/trunk. Please let me know if i can assist/contribute somehow. Thanks

This is weird. Asus usually doesn't use any own headers for firmware images. They simply work with "trx" files.

Asus site seems to have some problems right now, but I found some random firmware for this device and it's in file called RT-N10U_2.1.1.1.46-Black.trx. Content seems also quite normal:

> hexdump -C RT-N10U_2.1.1.1.46-Black.trx  | head
00000000  48 44 52 30 00 10 73 00  95 4a 52 4e 00 00 01 00  |HDR0..s..JRN....|

I've no idea what's going then... neutral

What is also strange is that a dd-wrt image works (exactly using the same method, meaning - uploading using the original asus firmware). I tried it because i wanted to make sure that asus doesn't deny it because is a custom build (so non-asus firmware), but apparently is not that. I do want to get openwrt working on this big_smile , dd-wrt is not my choice big_smile

Could you do the same on DD-WRT firmware that worked fine for you? I mean

hexdump -C dd-wrt.firmware | head

The image i use now on the asus (their firmware) is smth like that:

[cage@anubis Download]$ hexdump -C /tmp/RT-N10U_3.0.0.4_374_5517-g302e4dc.trx  | head

However, this is the second version of Asus firmware i tried (initially it had a older version by default, i tried with that one to load openwrt firmware, but it didn't worked, then i upgraded to latest asus firmware and tried again with openwrt firmware - the result was the same).

Hello,

Sorry I didn't catched your post yesterday regarding dd-wrt firmware.

Here it is the hexdump:

Hello

Back again. smile

I managed to install latest snapshot on my N10U (B1) openwrt-brcm47xx-generic-squashfs.trx    - using this file (it says is made on 20 june 2014).

I can telnet/ssh on it, however i don't manage to have the wireless interface up.

When i installed it , the file /etc/config/wireless was not existing. I made my own file with the following config:

config wifi-device wl0
          option type mac80211
          option channel 5

config wifi-iface
          option device wl0
          option network  lan
          option mode ap
          option ssid  OpenWrt
          option encryption none

However, it seems that when i try to bring it up it doesnt say anything wrong but is not bringing it up:

root@OpenWrt:/etc/config# wifi
root@OpenWrt:/etc/config# wifi status
{
        "wl0": {
                "up": false,
                "pending": false,
                "autostart": false,
                "disabled": false,
                "interfaces": [
                        {
                                "section": "cfg033579"
                        }
                ]
        }
}

Any ideas?

Well, I may be wrong, but I guess that even a perfect config won't replace a working driver.

Yah ... i noticed that on bugs-list they marked it as fixed ... so the ethernet works but wireless driver is not working. I  reopened that ticket perhaps somebody will look into it smile . What is strange is that dd-wrt works without problem ... But , i want openwrt big_smile (that's why i tried again).

Check your syslog, the reason the wifi doesn't come up should be in there. I'm not sure if there's a way to force the wifi command to display actual useful output to the terminal like it used to do in the past...

May look silly, but how do i check syslog?

Your config is incomplete because you haven't actually told it which wireless device to use. However your log looks like its being detected and initiated properly.

Do an iw list and confirm it lists the phy(s), then put the phy(s) you find in there into your config as
option phy 'phy(number)' in the device section.

Hi all,

I have purchased a brand new Asus RT-N10U (B1) router and I want to use it in a hamradio project. According to OpenWRT website it is compatible and should work. However, when I try to install OpenWRT firmware router refuses all the time and so I firmware is not installed..

I have tried files from https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots … x/generic/ and https://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_b … x/generic/ those ones with the .TRX extension.

What am I doing wrong ?

Any answer will be welcome to my personal email: ct1drb72@gmail.com.

Best regards.

David Quental

Asus expects TRX format but somehow magically modified. It needs to contain a MAGIC at the end of binary.

Currently OpenWrt doesn't generate Asus-compatible TRX images. The only reason to install OpenWrt on Broadcom based Asus device is to use CFE directly, see http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/techref/bootloader/cfe

Unfortunately I'm too busy and I don't have any Asus to fix above.

Hello Zajec,

thanks for your answer.

Well, yesterday evening I installed OpenWRT but previously I had installed the DD-wrt and then it worked well.

Wireless is broken but there is no problem. Later one I tried to install the trunk version but it did not work.

Up to now there is a routing problema but maybe it is not related with OpenWRT firmware. I will keep you in touch about new developments.

Best regards.

David Quental

Hello Zajec,

just to inform you that my router is working very well under OpenWRT. Next week I will purchase an Asus WL-500g Premium and I will install OpenWRT firmware.

Best regards.

David Quental

Thanks for info smile

FWIW, OpenWrt generates Asus-compatible TRX images since yesterday. This includes N10U B one. It should be possible to install OpenWrt with Asus's official web interface.

The discussion might have continued from here.
