Looks very good! :-)

Next steps:
Flashed the firmware from the OpenWrt trunk snapshots download page(via serial/tftpboot). Installed LuCI, configured WiFi (works!), checked switch-configuration (OpenWrt discovered it as "switch0 (AR934X built-in switch)"): VLAN tagging is available.
Performance (loading LuCI pages) so far is quite fast.
=> Should be safe to try it out via web-recovery-flashing ( http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9618/ ) with the sysupgrade image.

Best regards,
Patrick

Downloading to try this now smile

Ok, here we go:

Updating File

Don't Power Down.

Please wait for seconds...

It seems the instructions on the WD web site conflict themselves - it says to set your PC to 192.168.1.50, then just below tells you to use 192.168.1.10. Interestingly, I couldn't get to the recovery page (http://192.168.1.1) when using 192.168.1.50 on my PC - not sure if its just chance or firewalled. It also seems the unit doesn't respond to pings while in this mode either - so you can't use this to make sure everything is up and running.

Either way, after a while, the power light started flashing rapidly, after a while went solid...

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Sweet.

I've updated the Wiki page that I started:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/wd/n600

It now has instructions on how to install OpenWRT etc as well as serial port info...

great work! big_smile even managed to install luci now and seems to run without problems.

how did you do that? I also want to extend my wifi range via WDS. i've got an easybox 802 which I put in WDS mode with connection to the N600, but how do I set the N600 to the correct mode to make a connection?

Hm, funny, all mornig was everything ok, but when I start playing with mounting I lose everythin and now I am trying again.

OK, First I install luCi
and after that I went to meni Network/Wifi.

You will see 2 net, one 2.4 Ghz and one is 5 Ghz. I use option scan on the 2.4 net and my another network apear, after that I simpli made connection with my old wifi net. (my old net is on x.x.5.0/24 name NN and net on n600 is x.x.1.0/24 name MMnet) and everything start work. When I finished with evethig on the meni Network/WiFi under 2.4 net I got two network. MMnet was marked like master and NN netwokr was marked like client. But after couple hours of playing I did something and lose everythig and now I am trying to make again.

@juhosg: Awesome! I tried something similar but didn't succeed. Maybe I shouldn't have given up so quickly. Thanks for the effort. smile

I clean my WD and start from zero. Ok, I put everythin in routing mode, two diferrents nets via wifi.  I do not have any problem with that. I did same like in that youtube movie. But I have two quoestion:

1st. My luci look different then this on youtube end openwrt wiki. Is it ok ? (I am totaly noob for openwrt, not for nets)
2nd. I can not make ext HDD whic I plug in USB. Do you sucecced to connect ext hdd on wd n600 usb port.

You have a different theme, that is all...

i really dont know what i'm doing

i have 3 routers on openwrt

1st one was easiest, it was Attitude Adjustment so i just flashed it and loaded the web and was away

this one and my 2nd was breaker barrier and to telnet in, set them up on the network and it downloaded the packages and stuff

not sure what Luci is doing far as changing schemes and such as it just grabs what there is when i set them up

i assume that if i set up any router now it has the new scheme

anyway, the n600 seems to be great under BB

good cpu, 128mb ram, shame its only 10/100

Yeah, well - that's faster than the wifi will ever go anyhow wink

I solve problem with usb, almost smile. Problem was that firmware was updated and kmod-xxxx did not work. When I put latest firmware 28.09.2013 and put depednices files I got usb hdd on the router. Now I am trying to mount hdd on openwrt and make share.

Update: Everthig works. Wifi routin, usb hdd with movies, Ushare (no subtitles), I can use wifi printer which is on another subnet. Now I am trying to put in function minidnla.  smile. Openwrt make something incredible from cheap n600

So, if you're having wifi dropout problems like me - try this build:

Linux version 3.10.13 (openwrt@openwrt) (gcc version 4.6.4 (OpenWrt/Linaro GCC 4.6-2013.05 r38259) ) #1 Mon Sep 30 02:06:02 EDT 2013
https://www.crc.id.au/files/openwrt-ar7 … pgrade.bin

It contains a couple of patches that haven't made it into the built trunk images as yet that may fix the dropout problems...

I do not have WiFi dropouts, everything work fine, except minidnla. If I restart router I have to remove luci-app-minidlna install again, enable in Luci and etc/init.d minidlna restart. After that and DLNA works. I put n600 in another room, connect desktop komp and wd tv live (b-rad) via utp5, wd my book hdd via usb. N600 is WIFI conected to enkom router (from net provider, no openwrt) to internet. Two samsung tv are connected via 5ghz to n600. I have internet on boat subs and everything works fine. Oh, I almost forget, WiFi epson print, scan, copy is on enkom sub and I can print from n600 subnet to enkom subote.

From my testing, it seems to be that it is only 2.4GHz and Android devices that seem to cause the problem. Other devices seem to work more as expected... Testing is still ongoing however....

Hm, I typing this on Android htc Flyer tablet on n600 net, no WiFi dropouts.

It usually takes upwards of 18 hours uptime before it starts to act up...

Sometimes a "wifi down && wifi up" fixes it, sometimes I need to reboot the whole system.

When it happens, I can't even access the web interface or ping the router via the 2.4GHz wifi side of things...
