I think it would more apply to trunk than backfire...
I am just finishing my patch for for new device...
Anyway, you need to add code for new device / platform and than submit patches.
There are manuals on openwrt pages, search applying patches on openwrt.org
I agree with jaceq: there is no point in basing it on backfire as it is dead / out of date.
