Topic: dead after flashing wr703n

The content of this topic has been archived between 14 Feb 2014 and 3 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

I downloaded http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_a … actory.bin into my V1.7 WR703N and it works EXCEPT 3G dongle support (or maybe USB support!) is broken in that it is recognised that USB devices are inserted/removed BUT no ttyUSBx devices are reported and there are none in /dev/:

Same prob here. Tried this tuto http://wiki.villagetelco.org/index.php?title=Using_a_3G_USB_Modem_with_the_TL_WR703n but it looks like pkg kmod-usb-serial is not supported on this trunk.

What do you mean?

Please read this Wiki page that gives you some hints on which version to install:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/about/latest

Basically, the trunk is the bleeding edge, where you have to build everything by yourself, and even sometimes it gets broken...

An easier path is to use the AA branch, either building everything yourself, or picking a pre-build snapshot.

Regarding the modem problem, can you give us the output of the "lsmod" command to know what kernel modules are available?

Sorry, I'm really confused about the structure of OpenWrt. Thanks for clarify.
The tutorial I referred asks for editing /etc/modules.d/usb-serial to include my modem (vend:10d1 dev:1506) but that file does not exist and I think the reason is that kmod-usb-serial pkg can't be installed in this...snapshot¿?

That's exactly the one I used. I've just downloaded the link you posted previously. Excuse me if I didn't named it properly, as I said I'm not confident with openwrt structure.
Well...I have installed the last attitude adjustment, which is the stable distribution but there is no way to get up ttyUSB* devices so 3g dongle won't work.

Update:

It worked¡¡¡
Finally could install kmod-usb-serial pkg and edit 60-usb-serial file. Afterwards, all ttyUSBs show up and the dongle got connected.

Any of these helpful? (This is AArc2 packages)

Nothing new about many device modules for kmod-usb-serial.  kmod-usb-serial-wwan is the one which worked for me for a 3g usb modem.  No editing of 60-usb-serial file needed in my case.

they you go, thanks lizby.

Seems my post on my USB 3G modem issue did make it to the forum at https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=43619 despite the warning message.

I would be grateful if those who posted recently about USB 3g modems would continue the discussion there.

This tuto did the trick for me http://wiki.villagetelco.org/index.php?title=Using_a_3G_USB_Modem_with_the_TL_WR703n
there is a mistake though: you must edit file /etc/modules.d/60-usb-serial (not usb-serial). lizby says editing is not needed if you install kmod-usb-serial-wwan pkg instead of kmod-usb-serial, that's up to you give it a try.

(Apology to the administrators, hope this is last post)

Hello,
I am new to openwrt and have just received my first WR703N which has the same firmware / build as "growngizmo" in post 230

growngizmo wrote:

Aktuelle Hardware-Versionen:
WR703N v1 00000000

My serial number differs slightly with 13128804xxx instead of 1313..., the other numbers are the same.

GadgetMaster responded to the above post with post #236

Just to let you know I got a router with the same build number as yours.  I jumped in with both feet and installed v1.7 that I got here :

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=42100

I downloaded this file and started the flashing process (patch cable). I could see two percentage bars counting up, then the connection to 192.168.1.1 in the browser was terminated.
The blue LED is still constantly on, a "ping" to the above IP still works.
After ~20min I disconnected power (microUSB) and patch cable.
When powering up again:
-LED stays off for ~5 sec
-then flashes for ~15-20sec
-then stays on.

Ping to 192.168.1.1 works. But opening this address with an internet browser gives no result.

Any suggestions how I can get to the web interface?
Any help is appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Dan

Did you try to telnet into 192.168.1.1?  You need to do that to set the password, then you can access the device with ssh.  Luci may not be installed in your build--it would be needed to access the 703n using the web interface.

Ok, via telnet I could access the device and create a password for root@OpenWrt.
The welcome screen says "BusyBox v1.19.4 (2013-0-24); Barrier breaker (Bleeding edge, r36412)"

However, there is still no web interface accessible.

Is there any "better" version which includes web interface? And how would I flash / install / upgrade?
I am afraid of bricking my device when flashing the wrong software.

Probably the easiest way to get Luci would be to sysupgrade to Attitude Adjustment 12.09 (March 3 compile dates), and then install Luci with opkg.

Assuming you have internet access from your device, after you ssh in:

cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09/ar71xx/generic/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin
sysupgrade openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin

When the sysupgrade is finished, reboot, ssh in, and run "opkg update && opkg install luci".

Enable automatic start at boot and manually start the LuCI server:
/etc/init.d/uhttpd enable
/etc/init.d/uhttpd start

BUT ... someone else would have to advise whether this process is non-bricking for your version of the WR703N.

Thank you so far, lizby.

BUT: How do I connect the WR703N to the internet?
The Telnet / SSH access was performed via the LAN port, I currently see no WLAN provided by the device.

Or can I share my WLAN internet connection when connecting the 703 via patch cable with my PC?

set up your internet via luci. Simples.

@robthebrew
The problem seems to be that there is no luci. See also post 266 & 268.
The idea by lizby was to install luci via SSH when connected to the internet.

I am concerned with "bricking" my device when applying the wrong image.

Oh, I see. This is news to me. AArc1 had luci included. I guess for space reasons it was omitted from rc2/final.
Can someone confirm??
lizby's solution looks the way to go.

he flashed a trunk image... aa images have luci!

@nebbia88
I think it was you who helped growngizmo with the same hardware / firmware version and provided useful firmware.

Your zip file from an earlier post contains various combinations of ...jffs2... and ...squashfs... as well as ...factory and ...sysupgrade, e.g. openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-jffs2-factory.bin

Which one should I use?
