I made a custom build and everything seems to have gone well, except for the fact that v1 img and bin files are not created..
Anything I could be missing here? (Do i need to 'Show broken platforms/packages' under Advanced configuration options??)
my make menu config has:
TargetSystem: AR7xxx/AR9xxx
Subtarget;Generic
Target Profile: NETGEAR WNDR3700/WNDR3800/WNDRMAC

Most likely too many packages so that the firmware does not fit any more into 8 MB flash in v1, but still fits into 16 MB flash in v2 etc.

thanks @hnyman.. i guess thats it - the img file size for v2 was about 11 megs.. I suppose thats why v1 image was not generated..
