Topic: Netgear WNDR3400

The content of this topic has been archived on 27 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I've just purchased 2 of these from woot.com (refurbs).

Has anyone successfully flashed a WNDR3400 with OpenWRT? Is there anything I should know before trying? I see the wiki has a link to a WNDR3400 page, but it doesn't currently have any info on it...

(oh also, I'll be happy to test, if necessary, when these come in)

Hey ERamseth,

I also purchased these routers from Woot and also am interested in getting OpenWRT up on these. Let me know if you make any progress and let me know if I can help.

Well quite honestly I'm not a dev at all. So far I've been able to flash dd-wrt with the .chk from Eko on page 7 of this thread: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=79102 then upgraded to build 17990 from here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/download … -nv64k.bin

So far it's functionoing well (I'm using one as a wireless AP and one as a wireless client bridge). No real reason to try openwrt just yet. I suppose you could flash openwrt from dd-wrt, but I'm not willing to mess with it at this point.

@ERamseth Would you be able to try to install openwrt on your 3400 and let us know how it goes? i have a project that needs openwrt and really need it for  wndr3400... thanks in advance for any help from anyone.

I got a WNDR3400v1.

Flashed trunk ( openwrt-wndr3400_v1-squashfs.chk ) from Netgear 1.0.0.50 firmware.
Update with Webinterface works ( openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx files)

Major Issues:
- 5GHz wireless detected as 2.4Ghz in luci / wlan0 not working
- 2GHz wireless working ONLY in B/G mode (wlan1) (luci config)

Minor errors:
- Board detection broken

About wireless 5GHz i am somehow confused - http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … ed_devices states that it should be supported, but maybe the phy version didnt match
or there is a display/driver error

While luci doesn't show 5GHz channels in the config interface, i got the following results while playing with radio0 (5GHz radio):
- default trunk image with b43, self compiled, produces a Kernel oops (ticket 13012)
- trunk image with brcmsmac, self compile, b43 unselecteed - Scanning detects 5GHz channels, working 5GHz client mode

Since the board isnt recognized (see " Found board: "Unknown Board" " above), maybe some driver selection is wrong.
Anyhow i am a little bit confused with all those broadcom issues/which driver to use on brcm47xx platform
b43 should support the radio (but maybe its another hw revision?) - see linuxwireless-wiki ; with both AP and Client (STA) mode
brcmsmac ( linuxwireless ) only supports Client (STA) mode
both driver support the same chipset BCM43224 that is used in the WNDR3400v1 but there are apparently hardware (revision) differences

I semi bricked the WNDR3400v1. linux, rootfs were not writable anymore ( commands : mtd unlock not working, mtd erase not working, sysupgrade not working)
I didn't manage to get rescue mode working with button pressing on boot.
Serial console from CFE bootloader  enabled me to flash factory and openwrt firmware again.

I noticed that when flashing the newer Netgear factory image, there were more nvram entries.

WNDR3400v1 board detection
After flashing openwrt the board is detected in the Kernel:

[ 1738.580000] Found board: "Netgear WNDR3400V1"

but not in broadcom-diag (luci webinterface):

dmesg |grep diag
[ 3.360000] diag: Router model not detected.
[ 4.076000] diag: Router model not detected.

The image that made the router reject updates was a "working" Kernel 3.8 and brcmsmac (client mode wlan) one.

Thanks for you work on then WNDR3400.  Despite not being able to get 5 ghz to work, has the wireless through 2.4 ghz (b/g)channel  been stable?  I am thinking about flashing it on mine.

Hi guys. Yesterday I flashed my wndr3400 v1 with the latest trunk, through the Netgear webUI. Unfortunately this bricked it. It responds to ping, but not on telnet. I´ve ordered a serial adapter from ebay. So it will take a few weeks before I can try to revive it. Just wanted to let you know.

Wondering if anyone has tried this on a "non specified" version - I found one at Goodwill that is not v1, v2, etc... just nothing. And it's listed in the wiki, but this thread seems dodgy. hmm

The discussion might have continued from here.
