Topic: backfire d-link dir-615

The content of this topic has been archived on 10 Feb 2017. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I have tried installing it like it is said in the manual. But when I choose the firmware file from my browser in recovery mode, it shows the page is loading and nothing more. It is 'loading' for several minutes and then just shows me the same page again. I have tried from linux, windows + IE.

Please provide us with more information...
- What firmware is installed at the moment? Stock? older OpenWRT? DD-WRT? which version?
- What manual are you referring to?
- Which firmware file are you using in your attempt to flash the device with? full path to download link would be best.

I have dd-wrt installed.
I am referring to http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-615
I am installing the firmware from http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/1 … actory.bin

That is for DIR-600 rev.A, not DIR-615. (Although the Wiki page leads to believe that it may be somewhat suitable for 615 rev.E)

And there are several hardware versions  of DIR-615 itself, with totally different processors etc.
Do you have rev.A, B, C, D or E? They need different Openwrt versions. (It has been a very stupid decision from D-link to maintain DIR-615 brand, although both chassis and the components of the router have changed several times during the past 3-4 years.)

The C revision is the star of that DIR-615 series, and has been supported for a long time. A, B and D were more crippled down versions, and E, F, G might be again something else.

I have rev. E4 and the wiki page says that I have to use dir600-A1 firmware for it.

You might be better off with trying to use the trunk version that has the newest patches for new hardware. The wiki article only specifies the oldest versions of Openwrt, where support was introduced. So, using Backfire for devices with limited support may be problematic.

Do I have to use dir600a1 firmware?

And what is better: squashfs or jffs2?

I have always used squashfs.

Probably, as there is no native Openwrt firmware for your router. But, as the wiki page says, the support via that -600 firmware is not full.

(In the long run, it might be easier to buy a router that is directly supported and that also has more flash than just 4MB.)

Ps. Did you notice this thread, which linked from DIR-600 wiki page? It might contain some useful pointer for you.

In DD-WRT,
Disable JFFS2
Reboot

cd /tmp
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-dir-600-a1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
mtd -r write openwrt-ar71xx-generic-dir-600-a1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin linux

How?

Hi all - I recently purchased a DIR-615 E3 in the hopes of loading OpenWRT on it.  After reading a bit on this forum and elsewhere I was able to load 'openwrt-ar71xx-dir-600-a1-squashfs-factory-10.03' and well as '...-10.03.1-rc5' (I had to hex modify the hardware magic number (last few bytes) on both to 'AP99-AR7240-RT-091105-01') and all seemed to be fine except for one MAJOR problem - no internet.

I tried both firmware images listed above and it seems like the same issue persists - the WAN simply doesn't come-up and/or work which renders my efforts completely useless.  Its odd since everything else seemed to work just great (LuCI, telnet, passwd, ssh, vi, etc).  Is this a known issue ?  If so is there a work-around ?

I realize that I'm using a DIR-600 image with a DIR-615 device but many on this forum and elsewhere have noted that that works for them.  I've since reverted back to the original D-LINK firmware and the router functions without issue (ie. the WAN works fine so its not a hardware fault/problem).

Do please let me know how best to debug this and/or what I should do next.

Kind Regards.

Hi tfft. Have you seen this?

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=30745

I've got a DIR-615 E5 router, and before trying to install Openwrt i was looking for some comments.

First of all i've read that E5 has the same hardware as E4 and E3:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=601972

So i guess a DIR-600 building profile should work, but i'm not sure what source code use. According to the first link i should use a trunk revision previous to 27321 right? Does anybody know if new revisions are working for this router? And the Backfire 10.03 branch?  Thanks!

You've probably sorted this out by now, but if not you can download ready to flash OpenWRT 10.03.1-rc5 firmware for the DIR-615 E4 from here: http://goo.gl/TpI17

For more information see this post: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 15#p142915

Thanks to everyone. dir600 firmware worked for me. I had to flash throw emergency console for that.

Hello

I need some help flashing OpenWRT on a DIR-615 ver. E5.
I have already some knowledge on OpenWRT (I have a Linksys WRT54G v. 3.0 runing OpenWRT), but I have never compiled a Firmware.
I have read that the DIR-615 ver. E5 has the same hardware as the version E4 and can therefore be flashed with OpenWRT (as in http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-615). But, as in https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=32274, something with the signature of the firmware must be made. I am clueless about that.

Any help is apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The discussion might have continued from here.
