Topic: netgear wndr3700v1 5G no signal and firewall problem

The content of this topic has been archived on 7 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I have opened a new post for the internet problem and will stop to update this one.

Update on May 23th: the eth1 is still up and down, which makes the internet disconnects. Does anyone can help?

Update on May 18th: the internet is still up and down. I updated the newest system log/ kernel log  below. Thank you!

Update on May 17th: as Problem 1 is fixed now, I will test for a few days to see whether the problem 2 and 3 are also fixed.
and give an update later. Thank you!

Problem 1: 5G has no signals. (solved: first reset to default; then try each channel, channel 157 get signals (83%)

Thank you, jow and MarkMentovai !)

Problem 2: when I use voip phones which connected through this router, I get disconnected every 3 to 20 minutes.
Problem 3: When I use msn to have a video talk, I get disconnection every 3 to 10 minutes. This happens even when I connect with the router using cables. I usually saw that lost of internet connection signs.
when I connected using wifi, sometimes I saw the sign like "no internet connection", but at the same time the wifi is still connected because I still can connect through ssh and execute command; sometimes the whole wifi connection is disconnected, because I saw disconnect through ssh at the same time.

Now I am using backfire (10.03.1-RC5, r26774); I tried other versions about 1 month ago, but I always have these three issues.

But I used the DD-wrt before I use openwrt, I did not get these three problems. (The reason that I switch to openwrt is that I want to use a shared harddisk, which I cannot get it work through dd-wrt but can get it work using open-wrt).

I guess the reason for Problem1: unmatched driver? (did not select the correct channel)
for problem 2 and 3: incorrect firewall rules setup.
I remembered that for software like msn, after a while the software should confirm that these two are still customs are still connecting by sending some syncronization signal. Maybe I blocked this signal.

Are there any firewall rule examples I can follow or copy?

thank you!

I run two wndr3700 in a wds link with rc5 and I do not see frequent disconnects. Is there anything suspicious in logread, whats the ouput of "iw phy phy1 info" ? How many active connections?

Thank you, jow!

I only know a few and can not figure out what is the reason. So I just run your suggested command and also paste the relative logs from LuCI.

I am not sure whether these information is helpful.

Next is the output:

for "iw phy phy1 info" and I also run "iw phy phy0 info", which is posted in the following

Which channel did you choose for 5GHz? You only have 36-48 and 149-165 available.
Are the dropping out clients connected wired or wirelessly?

I use 37 now, but I tried everyone nether is work. So now I only have 2.4 GHz wireless available.

Currently the dropping clients are all wirelessly connected. I used to hook up one by cable and it also drops. My ip phone, which hooked up by cable, it also drop.

According to your log you have three wireless networks active which frequently go up and down, also one of your client seems to show some powersave issues. What is your wireless configuration? (sans psk)

What’s this about? 37’s not a viable channel.

“iw phy phy1 info” gives you the available channels. In your case, you’ve got 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165 at your disposal.

Since you’re setting htmode to HT40-, the channel immediately below your selected channel (numerically, 4 less) also needs to be available. That means that you can’t use 36 or 149. You could use these channels, but not 48 or 165, with HT40+.

"Problem 1: 5G has no signals " was solved: first reset to default; then try each channel, channel 157 get signals (83%)

Thank you,jow and MarkMentovai !)

I had somewhat similar trouble with my WNDR3700 with a build made on April 30th, which rather equals the time of the rc5 test builds there. The link went up and down. The symptoms have not materialized with my later builds, so it may been something related to changes to some package at that time. Your problems may be related to that.

Do you have any suggestions for previous builds, which is stable and has few problems.

Thank you, Hnyman!

Links to my current builds for WNDR3700 can be found here: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=28392
My Backfire builds should be rather similar to the rc5 test builds.

I have downloaded this one WNDR3700-backfire-r26965-2011-05-21-1204-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin and am testing it now.

thank you, hnyman!
