I am experiencing similar issues in poor signal strength and frequent drop outs. I have an ASUS WL600g with a BCM4318 chipset.

have you tried latest rc?
It seems acceptable now with rc4 for me
On average it can reach 2MiB/s.

I'm running the latest yes. KAMIKAZE (bleeding edge, r24969) / openwrt-96348GW-generic-squashfs-cfe.bin / 10.03.1-rc4

Did you update the drivers or changed them to the broadcom ones?

Did someone knows how this chipset is working on 2.6 kernel (backfire rc4):

dmesg | grep WLAN
b43-phy0: Broadcom 5354 WLAN found (core revision 13)
