Topic: Make wrt54g into usb wifi adapter

I have an old laptop i want to turn into a netbook, but it has no wireless card and I am to cheap to buy one.

Is there anyway I can make the wrt54g and this computer work together to connect to the internet WITHOUT using multiple power cables

these are the ideas i had(any possible?):
* Take the wireless chip off and put it in some sort of usb enclosure to make usb adapter
* power the wrt54g by usb

if anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear

Power the wrt54g by usb is not possible, the device require 12v 1A, usb have 5V 500ma.
