I would like to avoid time consuming problems caused by defective parts or bad soldering in the jtag.
On the other hand, the jtag circuit seems simple to assemble / solder and I do not have to bother with an online purchase of a jtag cable.
Should I build a jtag cable or buy one?
build it 
very easy i made mine and it works very well.... (juste wire and resistor, not with the buffer)

Wire-and-resistor cables may work for some MIPS-EJTAG devices, but will not work for any device that uses DMA. Also, they may damage your parallel port. You really need the buffer.
