Maybe. But it's not as simple as it looks. You want to overwrite the current squashfs while it is the active rootfs. That can explode in your face, when the corrupted current rootfs causes a kernel crash or reboot while you were still writing.
Of course it can be done, sysupgrade does, but it stops all background processes (including sshd) before it starts. Overwriting squashfs without ssh, and without possibility to test your procedure before applying it sounds tricky.

If the u-boot was not damaged, then it's ok, I'll open the case then. I can experiment some.
Ok today I had success installing it, no weird errors. Interesting. I guess sometimes things have bugs.
