I have a Linksys WRT32X which is still currently running the stock and I have a new issue that has occurred since upgrading my broadband to a Gigabit connection. The speed test at the router says I have 920MBits/s Download and 103 MBits/s Upload however when speed testing from both wired and wi-fi connected devices these are only getting 100 or 200 MBits/s so it appears that the router is throttling the speed to the devices.
Just to confirm I've updated the Device Prioritization setting so that it says:
We are prioritizing your devices based on a speed of 920mbps
Can anyone advise will upgrading the firmware fix this issue or can anyone offer any assistance/guidance on how I solve this issue?
I reckon stock has some form of offloading which is probably wider in scope than what OpenWrt can offer you. So you will not necessarily be seeing higher throughput on OpenWrt.
If you do decide to try OpenWrt, make sure to use a snapshot image since the stable 22.03 release suffers from a switching issue on your hardware.
Thanks for your reply Borromini, can you explain more about what you are saying 'stock has some form of offloading which is probably wider in scope than what OpenWrt can offer'?
Your hardware by itself cannot handle gigabit routing in all probability, which is why vendors implement software solutions to achieve that (but seldom open source that code). Which means OpenWrt cannot benefit from that.
I remember similar experience, when I still had an WRT32X and when using stock firmware. Impressive numbers in the stock firmware speedtest. But realtime throughput was a lot less.
But 400-500 down should be possible on stock firmware without even having to tinker any settings (and all attempts of tinkering having no improvement anyway).
OK the plot thickens, I have disabled the onboard Wi-Fi on my WRT32X and connected a new AX3000 Deco X60 Mesh Wi-Fi. The setup is simple the 'base' Deco unit is connected via an Ethernet to one of the WRT32X's Ethernet sockets and as expected the new mesh Wi-Fi works perfectly.
Now when using a Wi-Fi 6 device such as my Samsung S21+ etc using fast.com I see speed very close to the 1GB download speed (also upload is as it should be around 100MBs) whereas using my PC which has a Killer card or other devices such as an XBOX Series X (Note: both of which are meant to be optimized via the WRT32X's QoS/Prioritization functions to be a higher priority) I only see around 200 MBits/s.
Based on this it seems like it is the WRT32X's built-in QoS/Prioritization functions that may be causing my issues.
Does that seem logical and if so does anyone know if there is there a way to disable the QoS/Prioritization functions within the WRT32X there is nothing in the UI for this it is on by default is there a config setting in the OS I can change to test?
