Wrt1900 radios

Hey Y’all!
After an unsuccessful attempt at getting openwrt installed on my wrt1900acs, I started doing some research about the box. Needless to say, I am disappointed in what I have discovered regarding the radios in said box. Would it be possible to open the case and install different radios? Other than using another router alongside the 1900 for Wi-Fi, is there such a thing as a box that is nothing but Wi-Fi? If I were to use another router just for Wi-Fi, is there one that is the opposite of the 1900 that has excellent radios but would benefit from the 1900’s processing power?

  • you cannot replace radios in that device.
  • there was a recent mwlwifi push that improved things apparently, Try a snapshot image (23.05 or master) to test.
  • turn radios off and hang an AP off of it.
  • lots of small devices with no onboard radios, x86, ...

Would there be any advantage to using another router as an ap, one that can have openwrt installed, as opposed to an ap? I suppose an ap would be the wifi only box that I mentioned in my original post wouldn't it

As an example, on a rango I have the radios turned off, for one AP I use one of these. I am running OEM, but OpenWrt is also supported.

But sure, if you have an all-in-one consumer router, you can just use that as an AP; I do this for a second AP and it is running OpenWrt.
