Wired LAN stops working - or so it seems

Running BT Home Hub 5A with OpenWrt 23.05.2 r23630-842932a63d

Almost daily the system has a problem which seems to relate to the wired LAN ceasing to function. I have tried restarting the LAN (br-lan) interface but that doesn't fix it - rebooting seems to be the only way.

It also seems that when it happens browsing to the router from my laptop over WiFi, Chrome gives the site is insecure warning page and I have to go to advanced and say it's OK. Normally I just get "not secure" favicon.

Please could anyone advise me how to get to the bottom of the hanging? Complete newbie to OpenWRT and not got to grips with detailed logging yet. Thanks

run two continuous pings from your wired client,
one towards your router IP, the 2nd one towards 8.8.8.8.

do they start to time out when there's a LAN outage ?

Add one more ping to the mix - one to another wired device on your network. All running simultaneously. The patterns can help identify the culprit.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am pretty familiar with testing IP just first time with OpenWRT.

I have done ping tests to check what's up and down however I will endeavour to leave pings running, as suggested, to check the order in which they go down in case that helps.

Does the security issue referred to give a clue to anything?

No, this is purely an https warning -- the certificate in OpenWrt is "self signed" so Chrome is warning you that it can't fully verify it. This warning can be safely ignored in the context of your own local devices (it would be a serious concern for a public website, of course).

Perhaps I was trying to be too terse here! My question was about the difference in behaviour when the router is working properly and when it has the problem. Is it significant or a red herring?

When it has the problem it is as is if it is the first time I have browsed the router - Chrome makes me go into Advanced mode and confirm I understand the risk. Normally it just displays it is not secure on the address bar,

I would see this as normal behavior.
How often is the exception required, every browser restart, even if you close the tab ?

You can always add the non secure cert to the exception list, or use http instead of https.

As expected the wired LAN definitely stops working. Wired devices with fixed IPs are not communicating with anything - no pings. WiFi connected devices are unaffected.

Restarting the LAN interface does not resolve the problem.

Does anyone have another suggestions for further investigation? If not would appreciate suggestions of best budget options preferably ones with OpenWRT already installed.

At the very least copy and paste the system log. Highlight the paste and use the less than/greater than in the reply toolbar "</>".

Also provide feedback about the pings you were told to run.

Just noticed this on the HH5A page:
23.05.2 has some issues in the GSWIP driver that causes problems with the DSA switch configuration. Await some fixes soon as this is being worked on.

Is that likely to be my problem? Havent found more details in words I understand!

We cannot help you until we get, at least some of, the things we are asking for.
