Will OpenWrt allow me to increase my download speed?

I have a Netgear R6120 that is 10/100 on a 100mbs+ connection.

Will WRT allow me to actually get 100mbs+ or is the 10/100 a hardware limitation?

The ports on that model are only 10/100, so no. After overhead, the practical speed on a 100 Mb Ethernet port is about 94 Mb. If your ISP is faster than that you need a router with Gb ports.
