WiFi Radio Atheros AR91** N Not Working Except Legacy

I made extroot, during this process install some packages including hardware drivers, etc... At the end my wifi is not work. It is work only if option "Allow legacy 802.11b rates" is enabled. When I disabled wifi radio stoped.

Please help to analyze it and to fix it. I have 80GB storage after extroot is made. We can install , configure and so on... many things. I will try to put here a lot of information and really hope to fix this problem.

Your router supports legacy data rates.

Enabling legacy data rates allows devices to talk at slower, legacy data rates. (At the expense of lower throughput)

Disabling legacy data rates forces all devices to talk faster, or disassociate from the network.

I did disable legacy and wifi stop. How to fix after stop legacy mode?

Try HT20 (in the GUI, set channel width to 20 MHz). HT40 in the 2 GHz band is problematic.

I did change it so many time with various scenarios related to options and still without any luck. Apart of that, I reinstall all ath9*** packages qnd then installed back. Remove wan interface and then create a new one. At the moment I disable legacy wifi become death.

I even use auto, default country , changing wifi security. Nope, nothing is help.

The only things which may related with the problems are those two config. The first is auto option at the boot. May be this is wrong detection?

It's probably time to look into new hardware. You're talking about a model that is almost 15 years old now. This device only has 32MB RAM which makes it unable to run anything later than 19.07, and this version has been EOL and unsupported for several years now. There are many known security vulnerabilities in these older versions, so they are no longer safe to use.

That said, I would expect that the necessary wifi packages would be included in the standard release image -- you shouldn't need to install any other packages. In fact, what else are you installing? And is there any chance you are running into out-of-memory issues?

I am mounted 80Gb HDD. It is now superb machine even it is too old. I did not like new devices. The most of the new one just take my freedom to install whatever I want. They are also too limited. Openwrt never old.

Apart of that this router is oldest then my daughter. He is like my oldest son to me :smile:

Having a massive HDD serves very little purpose for routers, most of the time. But even more so, you don't have enough memory to run many additional packages, so you're not really gaining anything other than the ability to store additional packages (running them will probably cause you problems with OOM situations). It's like giving a vegetarian 100lbs of fresh meat.. sure, it's food, but they're not going to eat it, so it's not actually useful to them.

I've seen multiple 802.11n clients refuse to connect after turning off legacy rates. That often means your signal is not strong enough so the link switches to lower rates. The solution is to leave legacy rates on. I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve with a stone age router and wireless protocol... It's not like you'll be seeing tangible improvements like you would with upgrading your hardware.
