Wifi issues with Xiaomi Redmi Router AC2100

I recently bought a Xiaomi Redmi Router AC2100 and flashed the supported and stable version of Openwrt 21.02.0 to be used as a dumb AP with fast roaming.

Since then I have been experiencing issues with the wifi connection, the LAN ports of the router remain connected and fully working, and LuCi can be accessed. But the wifi signal does not transfer any data, no internet and no lan access. Phones complain about no internet, port scanning while connected to wifi gives zero results so no lan devices are reachable. A reboot fixes the issue temporarily, but it can happen a few hours after anyways.

The issue seems to happen at random, I haven't found a pattern. It has happened with only three wifi clients connected to it. It cannot be a router, DHCP or DNS issue since there are two Xiaomi AP's on the same network running the same version of openwrt that have never had any issues, and their wifi keeps working while the Redmi AC2100 is broadcasting a wifi signal without connectivity.

Configuration is exactly the same as the other two Xiaomi AP's. All ports are bridged on the LAN to act as a switch, DHCP disabled. Fixed channels, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands are on the same ssid and password, fastroaming enabled and clients jump between AP' s without issues.

Please let me know if you find something wrong in the config or the logs, I am losing my mind with this issue and the network becomes unusable on a daily basis.

I was able to save a syslog while the issue happened:

Any advice will be appreciated, openwrt has always worked well for me and I bought this router because it was supported, I must be doing something wrong and I want to fix it.

Try this...

Anything in dmesg? OOM?

Thank you for your reply

Disable Inactivity Polling was already disabled, I have increased Station Inactivity limit from the default 300 seconds to 28800 seconds (8 hours)

Let's see if this fixes it

Not sure what do you mean by that, how can I check those parameters/settings?

Kernel logs. Check for obvious errors there.

Haven't found anything but the router hasn't crashed since the last reboot yesterday. If it crashes I will check both sys and kernel log and upload them here. This is the current kernel log:

Today it crashed again, I had to get it working so I rebooted it and didn't have time to save the logs.
I have moved the router to a better location so the next time it fails I will know instantly.

I have one of these devices, which I use as a dumb AP.

When I first set it up, just as a test I had both radios enabled. I found that radio0 ("MediaTek MT7603E 802.11bgn") didn't perform well. As I was only looking to expand my AC range, I disabled it.

radio1 ("MediaTek MT7615E 802.11nac") has been rock solid for me. Depending on your setup, that may be worth a try to narrow things down.

I've gone weeks of uptime with this device (again as dumb AP). Only having rebooted because of my want to upgrade firmware versions.

Thanks for your reply
In my router both wifi frequencies stop giving access to the network/internet.
Disabling 2.4g is not ideal, I have a lot of smart home devices that only work at 2.4g

Are you running this exact version of openwrt?
Powered by LuCI openwrt-21.02 branch (git-21.231.26241-422c175) / OpenWrt 21.02.0 r16279-5cc0535800

For this AP,I actually build the stable 21.02.X snapshot; Currently running:

Powered by LuCI openwrt-21.02 branch (git-22.025.79177-4ec18ec) / OpenWrt 21.02-SNAPSHOT r16475-6d266ef158

I think at the very least you should update to 21.02.1. If you're comfortable building your own either through source or through github workflows you can try either master snapshots or 21.02.1 master snapshot (as I assume you'll want Luci web interface, which auto-built snapshots won't include).

I think 21.02.2 is probably fairly close to being branched off if you can't build, and can wait a bit.

Thanks, I didn't notice that 21.02.1 was already available. I have upgraded all my AP's to it keeping the original config. I'll wait and see if it crashes again.

I will wait for 21.02.2 to be released officially, I have no experience in buding from scratch

After 2d and 11h without any issues today it failed, but only on my phone and a reboot of the 5ghz interface fixed it, my computer connected over wifi just fine, and the mac of my phone and computer is blocked on all the other APs so I know for sure I was connected to the Redmi Ac2100.

Wifi died at around 23:40 on client device 28:c2:1f:28:30:3d, at 23:43 I connected to the router and restarted the 5ghz interface. The client that connects at 23:41 is my computer with mac d4:3b:04:d9:de:6f and I could run speedtest at 5ghz without issues while my phone was telling me "no internet connectivity" and I couldn't reach the local network or internet from it.

Here is the syslog: https://pastebin.com/mHVRVD1Q

Kernel log: https://pastebin.com/Z6HUWLt2

Still getting frequent "deauthenticated due to inactivity (timer DEAUTH/REMOVE)" even after increasing the time to 8 hours

Any help will be appreciated, I hope 21.02.2 will fix this issue because 21.02.1 unfortunately did not.

Hi,

I have the same problem, in a redmi AC2100, since a year ago, sometimes the wifi fails, the clients are mainly iphones, and with heavy traffic, I last updated the router with a snapshot last april and the issue remains at the time the only workaround was/is reboot the router everyday early in the morning via crontab.

I have another router using two android phones, a laptop and the router don't have any problems and have uptimes for weeks

Hi, could you please share your crontab?

cat /etc/crontabs/root
30 5 * * 1,3,5 /sbin/reboot

so the router reboots Monday,Wednesday and Friday at 5:30

Since only restarting the wifi interfaces solved the issue, I have modified and added this as a scheduled task so it's only taking 5-10 seconds for the client to reconnect instead of a reboot that can take minutes:

30 5 * * 1,3,5 /etc/init.d/network restart

Still hoping this gets a proper fix but in the meantime this should work.

It crashed again, scheduling a daily restart of the network services is not enough. And I can see that it's happening every day on the syslog.

I had to ssh in and restart them manually at 9pm yesterday. Patiently waiting for the official release, I hope that fixes the issues.

Hi,

If you can open a bug report, because the problem, isn't known by the developers upstream.

I'm unable to open a bug, because the router doesn't belongs to me, so I cannot test upcoming fixes, and the restart early in the morning mask the issue for their workload,

the issue involves iphones and ancient ipad, because I have the same routers with android phones, and their uptimes are months without issue

Not sure how to open a bug report, right now the issue has not been fixed by the daily reboots, I experience disconnections and issues almost daily.

And the weird thing is, not all devices have issues. For example I ask google to turn on the tv, the backlight wifi strip turns on but the IR blaster has no internet access. Both devices are next to each other and connected to 2.4ghz. A manual restart of the 2.4ghz interface fixed the issue instantly.

I have upgraded all my APs to OpenWrt 21.02.2 r16495-bf0c965af0, and the problem persists on the Redmi AC2100. Such a waste of money, the Xiaomi Mi 4A Gigabit is extremely stable and so much cheaper, but it's top speed and range aren't as good. I should have bought a second one of those.
