Wifi extender - please point me in the right direction

I have a Netgear RBK40 (RBR40 + RBS40), which is a pair of AC2200 devices, the RBR40 acts as the normal router, the RBK40 is a wifi extender/bridge, with 4 ethernet ports. I'm hoping to plug a VOIP phone into one of those ethernet ports. From what I'm seeing there are a variety of ways to configure them in OpenWRT:

AP+STA
WDS
relayd
802.11s mesh
batman

Both devices have OpenWRT 24.10.0 on them. What's the easiest way to configure them so that when I install them at my 70 year old mother's house, they'll just work?

EDIT: and followup question, when using the firmware builder for the RBS40 extender, should I remove the firewall and ppp packages?

Easiest is wired

If you plan on adding more devices then mesh or batman
If it is just 2 devices then WDS

other 2 modes would be if you have 3rd party main router.

In the end all bands have same wifi access point name+login landing in same subnet with dhcp.
