Wifi 5ghz poor performance MT7612EN (NewifiD2) [23.05]

Hi all,

I currently updated my NewifiD2 to Openwrt 23.05, and use it as a wifi repeater.
I'm using a usb dongle with MT7921AU wifi chipset as client wifi to connect my main router. The built-in wifi is used as AP.

The 2,4Ghz wifi has very good performance and is very stable (around 90Mbps max speed).

However, the 5ghz one (MT7612EN) is terrible: it barely reach the performance of the 2,4ghz, and only once you've found the "best combination" of parameters (channel 149 to 157, bandwith of 40mhz and power of 10mW).
Other channel cannot go above 30-40Mbps with high latency, 80mhz bandwidth result in barely functional wifi (1-4mbps with catastrophic latency), and increasing the power decrease the data rates.

Is this due to a limitation in the driver for the MT7612EN or have I missed something?
Is there any NewifiD2 / MT7612EN users experiencing a good 5ghz wifi performance?

from own experience with Mediatek:
In case both uplink and downlink Wifi are on the same 5 GHz radio of the same device, you would earn super low throughput and bad ping.

I have used Padavan firmWare ( MiniHere ) in relay mode sta/ap & speed is good

Also with MTK drivers

For me OpenWrt is bad in repeater mode

If I have a little time I will come out of the attic !!!

I rely on a mt7921au usb dongle to avoid this issue of combining uplink/downlink on a same 5ghz radio, so it's not the issue here.

So my NewifiD2 5ghz is only in AP mode (and the mt7921au client access is working at maximum speed, according to speetest)

Thank you for these tips!

I found this custom release: https://github.com/Azexios/openwrt-r3p-mtk
And this (not clear is it incude the MTK drivers or not): https://github.com/Nossiac/mtk-openwrt-feeds

I will give a try.
By any chance, do you have any recommendation to install MTK driver on openwrt?
