I wanted to upgrade my TP-Link archer ax12 and ran into this problem that this router has Realtek RTL8197F processor which is not supported. I would like to know why?

Because there is a lack of a Realtek driver for this SoC in the Linux kernel, and Realtek keeps their proprietary drivers code closed.

To elaborate, someone could try =P When I had a look at the most up to date source tree in that thread:
Drivers for 4.14:
- Couldn't see any wifi support for the integrated wifi.
- Didn't see anything regarding ethernet drivers (i.e. for the FE switch/RGMII ) Or at least it wasn't in the device tree from what I could see.
- pci driver that will would get you talking to the rtl8192? (So maybe some network connectivity at least?)
- SPI / flash drivers etc so you you can boot properly
- uart driver
Pretty hard to be a router without the ethernet switch part and only having one of the wifi cards at best.
