I am looking for a Wi-Fi modem router.
I have a 100 Mbit/s VDSL2 connection.
I need both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
I need a Gigabit Ethernet connection with 3–4 ports.
I don't need USB ports.
As I am setting up a smart home, I would like to have:
around 20–30 devices connected
multiple SSIDs (3+).
multiple VLANs to match the different SSIDs.
I don't need anything else, such as media servers.
Having looked at the Table of Hardware, I thought the FritzBox 7530 might be a stable and readily available option at a reasonable price. However, it seems that it doesn't support VDSL2, which is a bit of a deal-breaker.
Some help would be much appreciated
According to the Table of Hardware, my only option is pretty much the BT Home Hub 5.. so I was wondering if there are any other options?
I am currently using a TP-Link VX800v which has great hardware but is sadly not supported and I haven't found any indication here on the forum or anywhere else on supported getting added any time soon..
You've done a reasonably good job at providing details for your needs. The other things that would be useful are:
Your budget
Your location (country) since product availability and pricing is regionally dependent.
wifi coverage considerations -- sq feet/meters that need to be covered, how many floors, general layout and construction (i.e. the wifi needs may be very different for 3 floors, long and narrow layout with lots of small rooms, concrete structure vs 2 floors, open floor plan, square-ish, wood & drywall)
Also...
If you instead consider a standalone modem (which wouldn't run OpenWrt, but would be just a modem) + an OpenWrt router, your options open up significantly. There are only a handful of OpenWrt supported DSL modems in general, but literally thousands of routers when you remove the requirement of the modem.
My budget for Wifi-Router running OpenWrt + a modem would be around 150€, although I have absolutely no problem buying used on local market places and whatever.
I live in Germany in a pretty big city.
WiFi range:
my flat is about about 65m^2
just a single floor
the router is pretty much in the middle of the flat, room are pretty much in a circle around it, but I do have pretty thick concrete walls here and there
Don’t know what gives you the idea that the FB7530 doesn’t support VDSL2 - I’m using a VDSL2 connection through one as I write this. Yes, some descriptions use VDSL when VDSL2 is actually meant. See the device page and thread about xDSL support. However the AX versions use Broadcom hardware which isn’t supported by OpenWrt so the second hand market will be the only source of OpenWrt supported FB7530s now…
The 7520/ 7530 supports VDSL2 with (among others) profile 17b (100/40 MBit/s) and profile 35b (250/ 40 MBit/s), the xDSL side of it is top notch. SOC and WLAN are not quite as high-end (by today's standards) though.
Seems like I was missundestanding something.. although I am still confused by the options in the OpenWrt GUI.. or do I need to set VDSL via the config file?
EDIT:
I guess I just needed to set the Line Mode to VDSL.. was just blind in the middle of the night xD
..what does Tone mean, and which one should I use?
