What's a decent powerful router for loads of devices

As per the title, I'm currently using a Netgear R7800 but was wondering if there was something better suited, I have a household running loads of devices, 3 kids all with smart TVs, phones, consoles, laptops etc.... The wifi is taken care of via a mesh system, so the routers own wifi doesn't matter... I just want robust, reliable, openwrt compatible and with as many Ethernet ports as possible.

Or do you think a basic router is fine, but a smart switch would be a better purchase?

Is your router CPU bound when your internet connection is maxed out or you fail to achieve your provider's rated speed? If not, then you don't need a more powerful router.

If it's just more ethernet ports you're looking for, then a switch is a better and cheaper solution as you surmise.
