What zone does router system function operate in

This may be a dumb question:

When a router is performing operations like opkg update or diagnostic tracert/pings/etc, which firewall "zone" does that traffic originate from?

If you were going to make a Traffic rule in LuCI, the Source zone would be Device (output) and Output zone would be wan.
