Wgr614v10 firmware file is incorrect

Following a successful install of WRT on our main router, I decided to install it on an older one I had laying around, too, to experiment with.

The most recent build for the router is this one:

Model: NETGEAR WGR614 v10
Platform: bcm47xx/mips74k
Version: 22.03.7

I'm here because when I upload the .chk file to the router through it's stock firmware update page, I get a message:

"This firmware file is incorrect."

I redownloaded, checksum check, everything looks good. At this point, I could obviously just toss the thing and move on, but it feels like a challenge now, and I feel like the router is laughing at me.

Any suggestions before moving on?

Keep in mind:

  • the 22.03.x branch is EOL, so even if there were something broken, it's not going to be fixed
  • this seems to be a 4/16 device, which hasn't met minimum system *requirements for over half a decade by now, it is not supported anymore and chance to run OpenWrt 22.03.x on it are zero (even if you would make it fit, it would crash and burn while booting with out of memory errors)
  • this device has no future (nor past, really) with OpenWrt, just save your breath and replace it with something out of this world (the used markets tend to have quite a few cheap options)

Device includes a physical switch to disable the wifi radio. Before I toss it, with wifi disabled, couldn't this serve as a quite capable 10/100 4 port Ethernet switch?

While I have 300 Mbps internet speeds, I am not opposed to a 10/100 switch for many of my needs.

Just curious. Tossing seems such a waste these days.

Happy

16 MB RAM are not sufficient to make OpenWrt boot.
4 MB flash won't fit anyways.
