Wdr4300 v1 - wifi slow with webcam

Hi there!

I downgraded from 22.03 to 19.07.9 because lack of space on the device for usb support. Since i discover issues with wifi:

when using Skype and turning on my webcam (connected to wdr4300 via 5GHz wifi), the whole session goes stuttery - with firmware before 22.03 (i didnt noted it, sorry) i didnt experience such.

Ah: With Zoom Calls, everything is fine, using the same webcam for sure!

With my wdr4300 I am connected via client mode to neighbours access point via 2,4GHz wifi

Any suggestions?

thanks in advance,

Roman

Hello and welcome romanfunkt,

Downgrade due to better USB and WiFi support, I do understand.

Then starts some question-marks.
'When using Skype', I presume on a PC? Is that PC connected by WiFi, or is the (WiFi-)camera connected by WiFi? Aka, Zoom (with the same setup, I presume) does not have these issues.
Maybe the (USB-)camera is connected to the router, as remote-camera? How is the exact setup?

Oke, 1st of all: Skype and Zoom are software and not OpenWrt related, questions about these should be asked to their makers.
I do not know the software differences between those (I do not use them).

If I am correct, you use 1 channel of your Wdr4300-v1 to connect to Internet by 2,4GHz WiFi (WAN), and another channel to connect to your PC, by 5GHz WiFi (LAN)?

You could try to connect the PC by cable to the Wdr4300-v1 (LAN), or use also 2,4GHz WiFi for your PC (instead of 5GHz). And then check the connections.
Check also the CPU usage of the router during these testings.
The router has to do conversion from 5 to 2,4GHz, if WAN and LAN both run on 2,4GHz there is less conversion for the router

Hey DGdodo, thanks for your answer and sorry for my late reply:

Yes, thank you for your questions. These are of course important points:

  • the router is connected to the neighbour with 2.4GHz channel (WAN)
  • my PC is connected to the router via cable (LAN) to save WIFI bandwidth and router cpu load.
  • the camera (mobile phone with remote cam app) is connected to router via 5GHz and then the PC (associated app).

I used to run a similar OpenWRT version as 19.07.9 on the router, before the upgrade to 22.03, but as written, I did not document it. Since downgrading again, I've had these issues. So it seems (presumably!) to have nothing to do with Skype or Zoom, otherwise I wouldn't have ended up here with my question.

But I did not check CPU load. I will have a look at that via ssh and top, next time i use Skype.

romanfunkt,

Sry for my late reply, I hope you have it all working now.

Your setup is clear now and should not be that big issue.
Maybe your configuration is changed during up/downgrade.

If you have an old(er) config-save (backup) it will be helpful to change current settings back to those.

Have you checked the CPU usage? I'm still wonder if that caused this behavior.

This seems like it is a very probable bottleneck right off the bat.

If you run a speedtest from your computer, what type of bandwidth do you get?
