WAN IP Address configuration

I have a new OpenWRT One router with latest firmware. Before I deal with Xfinity horrible support, I set my Xfinity gateway to bridge mode and connected the new router. It did not obtain a WAN address or connection. I'd like to know what to expect and if I need to make any settings in the router beyond the defaults. I realize I will have to activate the radios when the time comes. Should it connect through the bridged gateway and should I see my public IP assigned? I intend to replace the gateway with my own Arris T25 modem as the next step. Thanks for any guidance you may offer.

Often, you need to reboot your modem, possibly a few times, to ensure that it forgets any currently associated MAC addresses and can learn the new one. Make sure that the OpenWrt One is the only device connected to the gateway.

Sounds like it may be more of a hassle to do it in two steps, so I'll connect the new modem and router at the same time, and it will have to wait for a couple of days until I have a full day in case I have to fight through the xfinity AI & incompetent agents.

Modem is finally working, and I think the key was rebooting the modem several times, but I also had to get an ISP tech here to clean up the outside cable connections to increase the signal level to/from the modem.
