I'm awaiting delivery of a GL.iNet MT6000 router. My initial idea was to set the router up and flash my 3 APs also with OpenWRT, but maybe I don't need to. My goal is as follows.
X1 IOT SSID with no LAN access 2.4Ghz
X1 Guest SSID 5Ghz no LAN access 5Ghz
General SSID with LAN access
VLAN for some wired devices, but I this is not essential.
Is it somehow possible to do this if I use the same SSID across all APs with stock firmware or must I flash them with OpenWRT? The only download is thar I lose quite a bit of performance vs stock AP firmware but otherwise, the stock firmware is really limited.
I've also just revently been looking into BATMAN. Maybe that is an option too?
They are Linksys Velop AX5400 which have only just recently supported OpenWRT.
The stock firmware is extremely limited, but the performance of the is excellent, which is the only reason I'd want to keep stock firmware.
You can split 2.4 and 5Ghz SSIDs and put them in Bridge mode, plus there's also a Guest network option, but it's not clear to me how I would isolate the 2.4 and Guest SSID.
do you need to ?
since neither are supposed to access the LAN, you could simply put them on the same VLAN.
keep in mind there's also the client isolation check box in the wifi settings.
even if they're on the same VLAN, they still won't be able to talk to each other.
This would be absolutely fine, yes. Is this achievable from the main OpenWRT router or would I need to set the VLANs up on each access point using OpenWRT? Sorry this is an area that i am not familar with, hence all the questions. Thanks!
Yes I did see that option. So long as they are off my main LAN, I'm not too bothered if the devices can see each other as it will really be IOT devices (smart plugs etc) and guests who simply don't need to be on my LAN.
