Very slow Wifi connection speeds

[ISP Router] - Ethernet- MBP.
OK is this what you mean?

[ISP Router] - 100/1000 ?- [Archer A7 v5] - 5G ---- MBP
But when you plug the Archer A7 into the ISP Router does the Archer A7 Ethernet port auto negotiate at 1000 Mbps?

That is correct.

No, the speed hovers about ~200 Mbps on ethernet.

[ISP Router] - Ethernet - MBP :: 1 Gig
[ISP Router] - Archer A7 v5 - Ethernet - MBP :: 200 Mbps
[ISP Router] - Archer A7 v5 - 5G - MBP :: 70 Mbps

The difference between Ethernet at 200 Mbps and 5G at 70 Mbps is puzzling.

Have you tried setting up the Archer A7 as a standard Wireless Router and connecting it to the ISP Router in a Double NAT?

Possibly these options help to improve performance?

  • Enable Packet Steering in Network > Interfaces > Global network options
  • Enable Software Flow Offloading in Network > Firewall > General Settings

Packet steering was already set to Enabled.
Enabled Software Flow Offloading.

Speed improved to ~100 Mbps with that change.

Good to hear - did Ethernet speed improve as well?
Could you also test with Hardware Flow offloading (in case you have this option)?

Changing over to hardware flow is an additional 20-25% improvement on wireless speeds over software flow. With hardware I see ~130 Mbps.

Ethernet wired speeds improved dramatically with hardware flow. Now getting ~750 Mbps vs. ~200 Mbps before the change.

Last hurdle: improve WiFi
Can you disable the 2.4GhZ band and on the 5Ghz band set a fixed channel like this?
(test both 40 MHz and 80 MHz Width)

I tried them all and I am getting the highest speeds with auto 80 MHz and seeing around 160-165 Mbps.

Possibly you are nearing the max Wifi speeds for the OpenWrt based TPLink Archer A7 v5

In Considering upgrading from TP-link archer A7 V5 to Flint 2, how big is the drop between wired & Wi-Fi speed? somewhat higher speeds were achieved but that might also be related to the WiFi Client device

Thank you all for the thorough responses and the help!

I while back I was getting ~350Mbit/sec wifi throughput on the same hardware: Archer A7 v5 wifi throughput test results using iperf

Perhaps a noisy neighbor? Test different channels, scan channels utilization..
