Using the Attended Sysupgrade feature on x86 with expanded root partition and filesystem

I am running OpenWrt on an x86 platform and I have followed the guide to expand the root partition and filesystem as outlined here:

However, after upgrade, they have been reverted to their default values like after a standard x86 fresh installation.

Thankfully, nothing happened, as I still hadn’t that many packages to exceed the limit.

But that made me wonder what would happen and would the system break if the disk space I was using prior to upgrading was more than the default size? Should I manually upgrade to newer versions if this is the case, for future reference?

If I followed the other threads close enough then iirc you need to set your desired rootfs size as a custom firmware option with ASU and the like.

If you are simply looking to increase rootfs partition size, the easy way out is ASU, using either owut or LuCI Attended Sysupgrade. Details at https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/sysupgrade.owut#expanding_root_file_system
