Upgrading fully working Unifi AC Mesh from 18.06.1 to 18.06.2 - kernel stays at 4.9.120 / no WiFi

Hi,
i've sucessfully installed 18.06.1 to the Unifi AC Mesh a few months ago. I'm used to upgrading a openwrt configured device via gui in luci. So I wanted to upgrade to 18.06.2. Unfortunately this seems to cause problems. I'm aware, that I have to install ath10k-firmware-qca988x and kmod-ath10k (these seem to be available already after update).
Wifi doesn't work after the update.
Suggestions:
Kernelversions stays at 4.9.120 after the update. Probably the old firmware is stored somewhere and this kernel is been used (kernel0 kernel1).

Is it save to go into recovery and flash both kernels via mtd write? Is there a gui way?

Thanks for helping,
Ray

Neither band works?

You will get kernel crashes in the log if the kmods don't match the kernel. If it is a dual kernel situation, try flashing the new firmware twice.

Thanks for your quick reply. I tried reinstalling three times - no change. Still old kernel, still no wifi working (both). I only flashed via gui

I can't see anything strange in sys nor kernel log

There is an 'option disabled 1' line in /etc/config/network shutting down the 2.4 radio. That may not be the only issue but it sure isn't helping.

This likely means that the 'path' setting in the wifi-device stanza for radio0 is missing or wrong.

You could delete or move /etc/config/wireless to a backup and let the firstboot script generate a new one. Then try to enable the radios with two simple APs.

This device does not alternate kernel partitions. The original firmware existed as two complete copies. OpenWrt takes over the first copy and leaves the second one alone in an unused partition that is the top half of the flash (except the last 64k is the vital ART). This should not affect upgrading.

Thank you again,
I moved /etc/config/wireless and startet firstboot (this would have deleted any config anyway, wouldn't it?)
No wireless at all was available - factory reset didn't have any effect.
IMHO this cannot work anyway, because of the wrong kernel (should be 4.9.152). Some research offered me this

Just updated my Ubiquiti UniFi-AC-PRO to 18.06.2 successfully, but it shows kernel 4.9.120 instead of 4.9.152 as it should according to the release notes. How's this possible?

so it seems not to be only my problem

So I guess I have to go this way:

BZ.v3.7.40# cd /tmp
BZ.v3.7.40# wget https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/generic/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-unifiac-lite-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
BZ.v3.7.40# mtd write /tmp/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-unifiac-lite-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin kernel0
Unlocking kernel0 ...
Erasing kernel0 ...
Writing from /tmp/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-unifiac-lite-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin to kernel0 ... [e/w]
BZ.v3.7.40# mtd -r write /tmp/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-unifiac-lite-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin kernel1
Unlocking kernel1 ...
Erasing kernel1 ...
Writing from /tmp/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-unifiac-lite-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin to kernel1 ... [e/w]

writing to kernel0 and kernel1

I'm just wondering if I could brick the device this way. And I don't know how to do it - via failsafe mode?

thanks in advance

persists in 18.06.4. Kernel doesn't get updated

actually this doesn't work - probably because openwrt is already installed. So how can I manually write the new image on the device?

what an easy solution:

BZ.v3.9.19# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00060000 00010000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00010000 00010000 "u-boot-env"
mtd2: 00790000 00010000 "kernel0"
mtd3: 00790000 00010000 "kernel1"
mtd7: 00020000 00010000 "bs"
mtd5: 00040000 00010000 "cfg"
mtd6: 00010000 00010000 "EEPROM"

BZ.v3.9.19# dd if=/dev/zero bs=1 count=1 of=/dev/mtd7
