Upgrading an x86 router vm [solved]

Greetings,

my router sits on a headless server running under a libvirt vm as x86.
the docs mention that there is no way to upgrade the router and that I need to take the new fs and replace the old on with it.
thing is, I need network to preform such change, any ideas how I can upgrade the router without special handling? (start connecting it to input and output or extract the hdd)

I was actually told less than 24 hours ago, that you can sysupgrade an x86:

I compile openwrt locally and I cannot find any sysupgrade or bin file in the target folder.

following this: https://miracoin.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/openwrt-sysupgrade-on-x86-barrier-breaker/
selected openwrt-x86-generic-combined-ext4.img.gz at the upgrade tab and thats. it.
