Upgrade TP-Link TL-WR842N v3 OpenWrt 19.07 to 21

Hi everyone!

  • TP-Link TL-WR842N v3, Qualcomm Atheros QCA9533 ver 2 rev 0
  • OpenWrt 19.07.7 r11306-c4a6851c72 / LuCI openwrt-19.07 branch git-21.238.28320-53f59d3

I want to upgrade 19.07.7 to version 21. To upgrade openwrt from 19.07 to 21 do I need to use a clean reinstall without saving configuration files? Or I can use a standard upgrade with configuration files saved. I am using wireguard, mosquitto and i want to keep the settings.

I understand that it is physically possible, but what is the best way to do it for quality and stability of the router?

Of course, fresh install. In 21.02.0 version there is significant change in network configuration (DSA), so I think, you should reinstall, and reconfigure manually.

Ок. Can i save some settings - wireguard and mosquitto?

I have not used either, so copy /etc/config directory. Make sure, that all needed files have been backed up.
