Updating OpenWrt to latest version retaining settings

Hi there, I am running OpenWrt 18.06.2 r7676-cddd7b4c77 / LuCI openwrt-18.06 branch (git-19.020.41695-6f6641d) on Asus RT-N16 (Broadcom BCM4716 architecture).

How do I know if the system can be updated and is there a way to do this retaining current settings?

wiki page for RT-N16 shows 19.07.3 'upgrade' is available
https://openwrt.org/toh/asus/rt-n16

18.06.8 is also available for the RT-N16
https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/18.06.8/targets/brcm47xx/mips74k/openwrt-18.06.8-brcm47xx-mips74k-asus-rt-n16-squashfs.trx

What do you use the router for?

Have you previously downloaded and installed any packages to the current 18.06.2 installation?

Hello Bill,
no this was the first installation.
Router i connected to a modem to allow home Internet connectivity, basically I have chosen WRT to allow traffic shaping

I don't own a RT-N16, but you could try this:

LuCI -> System -> Generate Archive to back up existing settings for safe keeping.

LuCI -> System -> Flash new firmware image You will be asked whether to keep settings or not.

Upgrading from 18.06.2 to 18.06.8 should be low risk. You can even downgrade back to 18.06.2.

Upgrading from 18 to 19 carries higher risk of existing settings not being compatible. You may have to reset the router and manually enter all the settings again. You won't be able to use LuCI to downgrade from 19 to 18.

Note that Openwrt support for Broadcom based routers is poorer than other routers. This is because of wifi driver issues as described in the wiki page. RT-N16 better suited to ddwrt or Tomato imho.

Thanks for helping

BTW I use the RT-N16 as a plain router, WIFI is delegated to Unifi devices
