Phones draw lots of power, especiñlly if they try to suck above spec watts from usb2 port.
Try AC powered usb hub in between to isulate devices?
I think you are having memory issues.
How full is the phone?
@brada4 may be seeing the same thing and wondering if the reason is power.
How hot is the phone getting? what phone is it? what is the typical coverage?
Have you tried different phones?
And what is this?

How did you get the USB port seen as eth1?
Did you edit eth1 to USB??? Why?
It may be working (?) but it's not elegant.
Does the Wiki suggest that?
I've always created the device; not edited one baked in.
So all of that and why?
I think you are having memory issues.
Doubt it. The phone is the Moto G Power 5g 2024
with 8GB RAM/128GB Storage and at least half of it (both RAM and storage) is empty.
Have you tried different phones?
I used the Moto G Pure
before with the same router and USB-tethering worked a lot better with it.

OpenWrt 24.10 maps a USB-tethered phone as eth1. No editing on my part.
Regards,
This is due to a recent change in the kernel, I think there's a PR open to get this behavior reversed.
