I installed open wrt on virtual box and I've been trying to connect to wifi but it's not working.. I installed kmod-mac80211

intel is a really bad choice for an AP ...
skip the vm, boot from an usb flash drive, try to make it work there 1st (but you'll probably fail).

are you using your intel 3160 to act as wifi (like an AP) for your OpenWRT? so that other wifi devices can connect to your OpenWRT via virtualbox? or something else?
more info may be needed as it is not clear or if you are able to draw a diagram what you are trying to accomplish, the better.

Intel cards are not supported as AP. You will need different hardware.
@frollic advice to test on bare metal first is a very good idea.
