Unable to change WAN mac address on Netgear R6220

Device : Netgear R6220
OpenWRT 19.07.4 and 19.07.5

Hello all.
I need to change the MAC address on the WAN port. I can do this using UCI command or Luci. In both cases the new MAC is not used and not displayed in the interfaces menu. I was able to do this with another router (Netgear 3700v2 with OpenWRT 19.07.4 and .5), so the issue is clearly related to the R6220.
Is there some kind of hardware limitation on changing the MAC address for the R6220 ? It has a MediaTek MT7621ST SOC.
