UART output garbled despite correct baud rate

idk if im stupid but i tried to connect to the uart pin using my pl2303 usb to serial but i get this output...im pretty sure i got the correct baudrate since i check it on /proc/cmdline file from the device

root@OpenWrt:~# cat /proc/cmdline
console=ttyS0,115200n1 loglevel=8                               earlycon=uart8250,mmio32,0x11002000
root@OpenWrt:~#

whats wrong with it? is my usb serial broken or something?

cmdline sets kernel port speed, not boot loader, tried waiting ?

i mean i didnt wait tho i kinda keep on and off everytime i see that garbage output, but how long should i wait tho??

until boot loader finishes doing whatever it's doing (there's usually a cpl sec count down), you should be able to see the u-boot settings, including speed (unless hard coded) using fw_printenv in OpenWRT (requires uboottools package).

okay umm im not sure because, i wait like until the luci is up but the output is still like that..i tried to press enter but even the enter output is garbage

then it could be bad soldering.
did you connect Vcc too ?
there are devices where the speed doesn't match the config, but they're not very common.

what does fw_printenv say ?

idk what you mean by bad soldering, i tried measure the voltage the output is okay...

wait lemme try the fw_printenv

no i didnt connect the ground and vcc, only tx and rx

i tried connect to ground pin but i didnt get any output

btw, this appears to be RS232, wrong hardware using wrong voltage, if you're doing it on a router.
they's usually 3.3 or 1.8V, RS232 isn't.

worst case scenario, you've fried the router end.

i feel very stupid rn but please school me
im using this usb serial

PL2303

I can't, since I don't know what's in the other end, I can only say home router usually don't use the voltages RS232 uses.

but it seems there's contradicting info about the PL2303 on Google, what did it say when you bought it, USB TTL ?

There're also PL2303 TTL2USB available, i have one one these (as well as a FTDI FT-232RL and a CP2102).
But it may be that the router/AP doesn't like it (that's why i have 3 different models) or the device or the converter are broken...not easy to say.

yeah, probably why I got confused.

@vigilante_1337 you should be able to figure it out by measuring the voltage on the Vcc and GND pins on the PL2303.

it said that its for microcontroller/raspberry pi/wifi router serial console port

so i should buy another USB TTL?

You must not connect VCC, that's correct. But you do need GND, without it it won't work.
What device (router/AP) do you want to use? Maybe just try only RX and Gnd.

its z8114ax, its zbt router and im trying to see if i can flash official openwrt image on it using the openwrt.git menuconfig, but yk the uart itself is a problem, dont get me wrong im super new to these world so im trying to figure out stuff yk

From the look at the picture, it's the right one.

i dont get it, what are you trying to say sir?

did you try connecting routers GND and Tx pins only, as suggested ?

im gonna try rn
