Two simple AP with 802.11r

I will start with my network topology:

Main Router (192.168.33.1) <-- LAN --> Openwrt1 (192.168.33.201,) <-- LAN --> Openwrt2 (192.168.33.202)

Main Router: no openwrt, managed by ISP, DHCP server
Openwrt1: no dhcp, wifi ap, 802.11.r, firewall, dnsmasq, odhcp disabled
Openwrt2: no dhcp, wifi ap, 802.11.r, firewall, dnsmasq, odhcp disabled

I am having a problem connecting clients to the OpenWrt2 router.
If a device is close to this router, it cannot connect to the internet through my network (I checked, and probably the client did not receive an IP address from the DHCP server).

When a device connects to OpenWrt1, everything works fine; the client receives an IP address and can access the internet. Additionally, when a device moves to the OpenWrt2 router and 802.11r transitions its connection to the second router, everything also works correctly.
The issue only occurs when the initial connection is made via the OpenWrt2 router.

I also noticed that clients connected to OpenWrt2 cannot access the 192.168.33.201 web page of the OpenWrt1 router (other local websites work fine, such as 192.168.33.1 from the main router). When client is connected to OpenWrt1 router he can access both routers` pages (201 & 202).

Where should I look for issues or misconfigurations?"

Start by disabling 802.11r on both APs (restart after doing this) and see if the problem goes away.

With disabled 802.11r there is still problem with connecting to router, but after a few attempts device is able to connect to it. But with enabled 802.11r it looks similar, so probably not problem here.

Restart both devices and test again.

I checked connection ports:
Openwrt1 uses Lan3 as input signal and Lan2 as connection to Openwrt2
Openwrt2 uses Lan3 as input.
Switching ports didn't change anything.

The problem is only with wifi network, LAN client connected to Openwrt2 works instantly, but wireless one cannot establish connection.
Also LAN client from 202, cannot access webpage 192.168.33.201, but he can access 192.168.33.1.

Also after removing that route I cannot access any more 192.168.33.202 when connected to 192.168.33.1. So probably that route wasn't incorrect?

That doesn’t make sense to me because the openwrt lan is on the same subnet as the resource you are trying to reach. A route splint be necessary.

Can you draw a system topology diagram? Please be sure to indicate the ports used for each connection and the ip addresses of each device.

I decided to create separate network for my OpenWrt routers and right now it works, but I have still issue with connecting to 2 from 1 network.

Current topology:

192.168.33.1 (ISP) <--- ( lan1 - wan ) ---> OpenWrt1 <--- (lan2 - lan2) ---> OpenWrt2 (192.168.1.2)

OpenWrt1:

  • wan: 192.168.33.201
  • lan: 192.168.1.1 with dhcp for that subnet

With that configuration network works, all clients has internet access.

The only issue remains is connectivity in lan network. When client connected directly to 192.168.1.1 cannot ping or access 192.168.1.2.
When client is connected to 192.168.1.2 he can ping and access both 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 (so here everything works).

I think problem could be with routing, because 192.168.1.1 by default route trafic to 192.168.33.1, but 192.168.33.1 doesn;t have any information about subnet 192.168.1.1, so packets cannot be routed correctly? Iam not sure about that, but it is my only idea what happend with it.

I reconfigured OpenWrt2 to use subnet 192.168.1.0/24. Also OpenWrt1 is reconfigured to use WAN (static 192.168.33.201) and LAN (192.168.1.0/24 subnet).

So this means that your previous configuration is not representative of your current one??

You changed your first openwrt device from a basic ap into a router.

Yes, you are right. I know it and that is not a problem for me. The first network (192.168.33.1) will be used only for Openwrt1 router. All devices will be assigned to 192.168.1.0/24 network.

In that case, since no devices will be on the upstream network, there is no need to connect to the 192.168.1.0/24 from that upstream network.

That was my assumption, but still I have issues with lan connectivity in downstream network. So my guess was routing from upstream network, but I am not sure about that. Maybe there is some other configuration issue.

So please restate the issue, with the exact addresses and method of testing.

Issue: cannot access 192.168.1.2 from any devices connected to 192.168.1.1.

Testing method: I am trying ping 192.168.1.2 and open luci page for that router, when connected to 192.168.1.1 (lan or wifi).

So how are you grabbing the config files from openwrt 2?

I can connect directly to openwrt2 with lan/wifi or I can ssh into openwrt1 and from there can ssh to openwrt2.

Client connected to OpenWrt2 has access to luci webpage and can ping it; also he can ping and access OpenWrt1. So problem occurs only for client connected to OpenWrt1.
