Troubleshoot internet connectivity - router or isp issues?

I have a Linksys wrt3200acm that has been running openwrt for ~4 years now. In the last month, I lose internet connectivity about once a day. A router reboot fixes it. Comcast/Xfinity have been doing upgrades during that time, so I don't know whether it's my router going south or Comcast issues related to upgrades.

  • the router is running the latest firmware (OpenWrt 24.10.0 r28427-6df0e3d02a / LuCI openwrt-24.10 branch 25.014.55016~7046a1c)
  • openvpn is configured and using protonvpn config. I've tried disabling openvpn, doesn't seem to be related to the connectivity losses.

Any troubleshooting tips welcome! I am very comfortable at the command line, and I was a network operations technician until 2013, but have not done anything very technical since then. Thanks in advance!

Anything in the logs when it happens?

Good point. You'd think I'd have thought of that by now, but I haven't yet, only after the reboot. I will make it a point to check the logs before I reboot next time! Thanks for the suggestion!

So it just happened again, and while I can't say specifically what the error was, I saw a lot of openvpn errors. So I stopped openvpn, then restarted it, and internet connectivity came back up. I have it set to connect to random protonvpn endpoints in the US, maybe I'll have to rethink that and just test until I find a stable one (although for over a year it has been very stable in this config). Yay, more testing!
