Troubles with mini PCIe on Mikrotik RBLtAP-2HnD

Hello together,

currently i am trying to get OpenWRT working on Mikrotik LtAP LTE equipped with additional R11e-5HnD mini PCIe 5GHz WLAN card.

LtAP LTE is pretty similar to RBM11G, which is already supported by OpenWRT, so i decided to choose device tree of the RBM11G as the base for the LtAP LTE. The OpenWrt verison i am working on is 21.02-rc3.
With near to no changes in .dts i compiled the OS, flashed the deivce and now i got LtAP LTE booting into OpenWrt from flash memory. Device is booting and working stable, R11e-5HnD module initializes and works fine as well, however, there is definitely something off with my config.

The on-board 2.4 GHz WLAN chip is not being initialized correctly and is not even listed in iw dev output.
There is what i can see in dmesg:

[   10.081426] ath9k 0000:02:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)

I have tried different aproaches to solve this problem, from adding a time delay in a PCI driver code to backporting older driver version and trying older OpenWrt builds as well, but nothings helps.
It seems for me to be a problem with device tree, in particular PCI bus adress mapping, but i am really not sure about it, so i would ask anyone to give me a hint, what else can i try to get second WLAN module running.

By the way, the module i am talking about is an AR9382 that is soldered straightly to the mainboard of the device.

Here is the complete dmesg output:

So with all this said, i would kindly ask you all for any help or support.

Thanks in advance!

Regards, Alex

Hi Alex,

It might be worth trying:

  • 5.10 kernel (rebase on Openwrt master).
    CONFIG_TESTING_KERNEL, CONFIG_LINUX_5_10

  • ath9k debug, via OpenWrt build with config CONFIG_PACKAGE_ATH_DEBUG, then rmmod and modprobe the ath9k modules with debug settings

  • may need additional GPIO switches to turn each PCIe slot on/off. The OpenWrt m33g DTS uses 9,10,11 but no telling if the same GPIOs are used for LtAP. To confirm this, you could request the linux source changes from Mikrotik for LtAP (in my experience; get ignored for weeks, eventually get a very old patch that is not what was requested). Otherwise, it might be possible to root RouterOS and watch the GPIO registers before and after enabling the slot/card.

Hi John, thanks a lot for you responce!
I will try OpenWrt with a latest kernel v. 5.10 and i will also revert back to RouterOS and try to figure out which exact GPIOs are used in LtAP to control the PCIe's

Hi there,

Is there any update on this one?
I have growing interest for this target and would like to offer some help.

Could you share your current work?

Thanks!

Koen

I have some issues with the R11e-5HnD and arm64:
