Trouble with wan dhcp on fios?

I just got Fios installed - I had them only install the ONT box because I wanted to use my Archer C7 openwrt router.

Connecting my laptop directly to the ONT everything works fine - I the DHCP server assigns me an IP, Gateway, DNS servers and boom I'm online.

When I plug my router into the ONT, no joy. The system log shows
Fri Jun 19 09:16:52 2020 daemon.notice netifd: Interface 'wan' is setting up now
Fri Jun 19 09:16:52 2020 daemon.notice netifd: wan (2331): udhcpc: started, v1.30.1

I never get a message saying "lease obtained".

I've tried power cycling both the ONT box and the router, same results. What am I missing?

It is usually the mac address bound to the ISP equipment for some time. Try to change the mac address of the wan interface on the Router to match the one of the laptop. Alternatively turn off and pull the plug of the ONT for a longer time. Consult with your ISP if they have locked a specific MAC.

Also try no to send any identification like hostname or other tags.

Did you explicitly release the DHCP lease prior to swapping the router? This may be necessary -- you can reinstall your previous router, release the lease and immediately unplug it, then connect your new one.

That seems to have been the problem. I took trendy's advice and put my laptop's MAC address into the wan interface and now it is working.

Is there a way to explicitly release the wan dhcp address from openwrt, so I can undo the mac spoofing?

On my ONT...you wait 2 hours.

Yes! When you stop the WAN interface, it will release the DHCP lease.
