Trim kernel size with CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS option?

In the course of some other reading I came across references to the CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS option being added to kernel v4.7 and wondered whether any OpenWrt developers had experimented with this option to see how it affected kernel size?

If I wanted to experiment with it myself, are there any suggestions about the best way/place to change this setting in a checked out tree? The Lantiq xrx200 platform is the one I'm most interested in, but I'd imagine users of some even more spartan platforms might be interested if the kernel savings are useful...
