TP-Link TL-WDR3600 resets itself

Hello I have an unused TP Link WDR3600 that I upgraded to OpenWRT latest version and suddenly it started to lose settings on its own after some hours. This happens with mostly default configuration and the router being idle, just connected to a computer through one of the lan ports
The router already had Openwrt installed, I just upgraded to the latest version and I started having this problem. I tried downgrading to older versions and the problem persists. I also tried updating to the latest snapshot.
I dont have serial terminal access to this router so the best thing I could think of to diagnose this was sending syslog to an external server, the last lines I see there are these:

192.168.1.1	Jun 3 11:44:24	snapshot	authpriv	notice	dropbear[2552]	Password auth succeeded for 'root' from 192.168.1.110:58989
192.168.1.1	Jun 3 15:08:36	snapshot	daemon	info	jffs2reset	/dev/mtdblock4 is mounted as /overlay, only erasing files
192.168.1.1	Jun  3 15:08:36	snapshot	daemon	info	procd	- shutdown -
192.168.1.1	Jun 3 15:08:37	snapshot	daemon	err	hostapd	rmdir[ctrl_interface=/var/run/hostapd]: Permission denied
192.168.1.1	Jun 3 15:08:37	snapshot	authpriv	info	dropbear[1231]	Early exit: Terminated by signal
192.168.1.1	Jun 3 15:08:37	snapshot	authpriv	info	dropbear[2552]	Exit (root) from <192.168.1.110:58989>: Terminated by signal

Any clue how could I diagnose this?
Could this be a hardware problem? I tried using a different AC adapter but the problem persists (its also from another old tplink router...)

This is the syslog from first boot latest snapshot build I installed

perhaps you should try a stable release, instead of a snapshot ?

https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?version=23.05.3&target=ath79%2Fgeneric&id=tplink_tl-wdr3600-v1

If it happens relatively quickly ("a few hours"), I'd keep an ssh session open from a wired computer and leave logread ; logread -f running, which hopefully provides some hints.

The router originally had version 22 something installed and was working fine, then left unused for a few months, when I needed to use it again I updated it to version 23 stable build that's when it started to reset itself.
I have already tried reverting back to v22, even v21, I tried latest snapshot just for diagnostic purposes. All installations are done without keeping settings.

Thanks, I'll try that.
Is that the same as sending the syslog to an external server as I was doing? Or would it also record extra kernel logging or something?

It's not exactly the same (remote syslog works on a lower level; longer and closer till the end, even if things go pear shaped - serial console access would work even longer than either), but it's a quick and easy approach (requiring pretty much zero preparation) that may already help enough.

I'll leave logread running overnight.

This is the syslog from a freshly installed 23.05.2:

I have noticed a couple of warnings about misaligned partitions, I guess those are just non-fatal warnings that could be causing this?

mtd: partition "kernel" doesn't end on an erase/write block -- force read-only

I searched for the OF: Bad cell count for /ahb/spi@1f000000/flash@0/partitions errors and I came to the conclusion these are standard errors not to worry about, are they?

I just used standard sysupgrade over the the web interfaces, should I try using mtd -r write factory firmware as I read in wiki, does it make any difference?

Unfortunately there is nothing else recorded on the ssh log apart from the same messages sent to the remote syslog:

Thu Jun  6 22:47:54 2024 daemon.info jffs2reset: /dev/mtdblock4 is mounted as /overlay, only erasing files
Thu Jun  6 22:47:54 2024 daemon.info procd: - shutdown -

Thu Jun  6 22:47:54 2024 authpriv.info dropbear[1154]: Early exit: Terminated by signal```

So something suddenly calls jffs2reset, which is an explicit call for a factory reset. Start with flashing an unmodified OpenWrt image again and check the reset button.

I'm sorry but I dont understand what you mean with "check the reset button"...

If you mean that the physical reset button could be pressing itself because of a hardware fault I dont know how to the check that.

This device has 2 buttons:

  • "WPS/Reset" labeled button (press button type)
  • "Wireless On/Off" labeled button (2-position switch type)

Reading the info here https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/hardware/hardware.button

find /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/keys -mindepth 1 -type d | while read -r f; do printf '%s: %s\n' $(basename $f) $(hexdump -s2 -e
 '2/1 "%02x""\n"' $f/linux,code); done
wifi: 00f7
reset: 0198

If I understand it right, reset: 0198 button triggers /etc/rc.button/reset action:

#!/bin/sh

. /lib/functions.sh

OVERLAY="$( grep ' /overlay ' /proc/mounts )"

case "$ACTION" in
pressed)
        [ -z "$OVERLAY" ] && return 0

        return 5
;;
timeout)
        . /etc/diag.sh
        set_state failsafe
;;
released)
        if [ "$SEEN" -lt 1 ]
        then
                echo "REBOOT" > /dev/console
                sync
                reboot
        elif [ "$SEEN" -ge 5 -a -n "$OVERLAY" ]
        then
                echo "FACTORY RESET" > /dev/console
                jffs2reset -y && reboot &
        fi
;;
esac

return 0

And wifi: 00f7 button triggers /etc/rc.button/rfkill action;

#!/bin/sh

[ "${ACTION}" = "released" -o -n "${TYPE}" ] || exit 0

. /lib/functions.sh

rfkill_state=0

wifi_rfkill_set() {
        uci set wireless.$1.disabled=$rfkill_state
}

wifi_rfkill_check() {
        local disabled
        config_get disabled $1 disabled
        [ "$disabled" = "1" ] || rfkill_state=1
}

config_load wireless
case "${TYPE}" in
"switch")
        [ "${ACTION}" = "released" ] && rfkill_state=1
        ;;
*)
        config_foreach wifi_rfkill_check wifi-device
        ;;
esac
config_foreach wifi_rfkill_set wifi-device
uci commit wireless
wifi up

return 0

Is that right?

The Wireless On/Off switch button was in the on position, even though the wifi is disabled (by default), dont know if that matters.

Could something else apart from a hardware malfunction trigger the /etc/rc.button/reset action?

As a temporary workaround maybe I can just disable the reset action executable permissions to stop it from being mysteriosly run?
