TP-Link Archer C7(CA) v5.0

I can get one on Marketplace fairly cheap and in very good condition. The openwrt page for this device supports 24.10.3 and I think that is related to the different regions (US/EU/CA etc etc).

Is anyone else using the CA version? Seems like a decent option from what I can tell.

From anyone using it, is this thing worth it? Just to replace an older Cisco 3500 that is pretty much at the end of the line for a wifi ap only.

Your device could be impacted by the ath10k issue described in https://openwrt.org/releases/24.10/notes-24.10.5#known_issues.
Staying on 23.10 might be a better option, for now.
You can however test, then downgrade.

Hope you got it cheap, it's ancient.

C7V5 EU is not affected  Just go for it, be very careful with composing initial install image.

ancient is how I roll

$20 Canadian.

change wifi driver

opkg remove kmod-ath10k-ct ath10k-firmware-qca988x-ct
opkg install kmod-ath10k ath10k-firmware-qca988x

then use owut to keep package set intact.

the -ct driver crashes often if you have more than few clients.

Perfromance (not really a) hack

go to network/switch and untag WAN VLAN on CPU port, then adapt wan/wan6 connections to use eth0 ipo eth0.2
gives some 10-20% throughput.

Quite frankly, 20 CAD for a decade old device is not a bargain. There are bound to be better devices on the used markets.

What would be a fair price in your opinion or which device should I be looking for? There are very limited options in my area.

Seller had to cover "free shipping" somehow.

I still had this in my ebay.ca cache from an old thread: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/355842426826

I had already decided against the C7 only because it looked like more hassle than it was worth and will keep looking around. But for a house dead zone ap probably would be fine. The one comment about wifi driver updates and dropping just kind of sealed my decision not to get it.

I love repurposing old garbage that people don't need for AP's. I bought a WDR4300 about 7 years ago for $5. It's a crappy old device that provides wifi to the garage to this day on version 24.10. Ya its an old pos that only has n speeds. But for a garage to extend wifi? Now that isp's seem to provide their own routers its getting hard to find decent stuff for cheap.

I do too, but sometimes you can buy some top notch stuff at low prices, at least on US eBay.
It won't be as low as $20 CAD, but if you add another $10.
Yes, I know US purchases probably are a no go for CA people atm.

rule of thumb for ebay US in Canada. Whatever the price says triple it once exchange and shipping are considered. But I will keep looking around.

wifi driver is least of your problems, 1 core dinosaur age cpu slows down transfers when you browse web admin or connect ssh
