TP-LINK Archer C6 + A6 and openWRT (stability, usage, improves to stock FW?)

Hi

I have two Archer A6 v2 and C6 v2 routers

I would like to try using openwrt on both of them.

So far my line looks like this:

Internet provider -> PPPoE -> Archer A6 -> Wi-Fi

I connect to Archer A6 with a second C6 router as a repeater via WiFi 5G and from it I connect a LAN cable to my desktop computer

(I can't check the LAN directly from the A6)

Both routers are ~16 meters apart in a straight line. I live at home, there are no other networks around me.

My internet is 500/100mb/s but I don't get such speeds with 5G (maximum 400, and on a bad day it's 250-300 and the ping can be higher 60-80ms)

I wonder if openWRT works smoothly on these routers in this configuration. And will openWRT bring any tangible benefits in transfers?

Doesn't it just make sense to mess around and leave them on the official FW?

16m doesn't really tell much, it depends a lot on number of walls, building materials, etc.

That is entirely within expectations for 2x2 802.11ac devices, ping is a bit high though.

OpenWrt does provide a lot of benefits, but an expectation to surpass performance of the vendor firmware is a bit far fetched - and the devices in question aren't that high-end either.

If you want faster throughput, the logical choice would be upgrading the hardware to 802.11ax - which can roughly double the throughput compared to 802.11ac; running OpenWrt is orthogonal to this (but nevertheless a good idea).
