Hello everyone,
I hope you're all doing well. I'm currently trying to install OpenWrt on my TP-Link MR6400 (EU) V3 router (only V1/4/5 is supported officially). After conducting some research, I stumbled upon a thread in this forum that say
"TL-MR6400 v3 is basically the same hardware and flash layout as the TL-MR3420 v5 with the exception of the LTE modem. I have the openwrt factory image for the MR3420 v5 booting fine on the MR6400 v3 , both ethernet and wifi also working without any issues."
I've no issue with LTE functionality not working as i don't use it . Has anyone successfully flashed the TL-MR3420 v5 firmware onto the TP-Link MR6400 (EU) V3 and managed to get it functioning properly? i know i can just flash it and try it out but i don't have another router to use if it got bricked.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
It would probably make sense to reach out to the person who posted what you quoted earlier. Can you link the thread?
hi @psherman
here's the thread but the author of the thread is not active anymore on the forum as it seems, hoping someone else might have gone throught the process with success.
Understood.
Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to flash the firmware for a different device unless it is explicitly stated in the wiki that the firmware is indeed compatible. So the advice would typically be "don't risk it, unless you're okay with a brick." In your case, you said you don't have a backup router, so a brick could be a major headache for you. With that in mind, I'd recommend heeding that general advice unless/until you get confirmation that it is safe to use the MR3420v5 firmware on your device.
That said, sometimes users who have been inactive will be willing to come back if we tag them (assuming they get the email notification). I'll go ahead and do that here... with any luck @gareth41 can advise as to their success and/or issues since they posted that last thread.
understood, thanks for the advise.
