Whilst thinking about upcycling old routers to host must-see material (or hiding smaller new devices in public spaces.. ), it occurred to me that it might be possible to connect a network of the devices to perform some tasks.

Is there anything like this in development? Would it be feasible to create city-wide extranets with some capacity to send messages and share files?

You might like to read about the "Detroit Peoples Internet". I'm not sure if that is exactly what kind of thing you were after?
