Tailscale client on OpenWRT 24

Using v24. Most tutorials & wiki pages for Tailscale are about v22/23. I could install the client, it is also shown connected to the server. I also created the interface and firewall rule and tailscale status shows other peers and the assigned ipv4 address.

Yet I can't ping the router on its Tailscale IP address.

  • tailscale status does not show any error. shows other clients and the server assigns an ipv4 address
  • but ip addr show tailscale0 only shows an ipv6 address
  • also logs is littered with daemon.err tailscaled[4570]: monitor: RTM_NEWROUTE: src=, dst=, gw=, outif=18, table=254

Seemingly it can't lock an ipv4 address, why?
One possible clue from wiki, but don't know if this is valid for v24 and wouldn't install stuff to break my install:
OpenWrt 22.03 and later, use nftables (superseding iptables) / Tailscale alone is unable to configure nftables automatically
