Support for Asus ZenWiFi BT8 Tri-band Wifi7 (Mediatek MT7988)

Got it working. Needed to set WPA3. Runs OK now.

Any results on an A2? The wiki currently mentions only A1 and B1.

Should still flash okay. Asus doesn't do crazy revisions like others. Likely flash or RAM change. Made in Vietnam?

One issue I noticed recently (on 25.12.4) is LAN3 (2.5Gb) doesn't always come back properly when the device is rebooted.

I noticed this initially after a power outage, a bunch of my stuff didn't come back, I eventually found out it was due to anything on the wired ethernet not talking to the router. The link LEDs were up on both the switch and the router and the openwrt status page's Port Status did show a 2.5Gbps link but none of the devices on the wired network could reach the internet.

Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and didn't get to dig deeper as I needed the network up urgently.

Unplugging and replugging the LAN 3 network cable fixed it.

Yesterday I rebooted the router for some unrelated reason (using the reboot option in Luci) and the same thing happened. The Port Status did show some packets in and out funnily enough, but the devices on the network were unhappy. Sadly here too, I couldn't leave it in that state long enough to investigate and so "fixed" it by unplugging and replugging (I had to do it a couple of time for it to work this time).

Otherwise it's working like a charm. I have a second one I haven't comissioned yet, I'll be trying to get more data on the problem using it when I get a chance.

LAN3 to switch (2.5G netgear), no issues at all.

LAN3 to 2.5G client, random times it won't come back from sleep. Both clients are linux and since upgrading to kernel 7.0, the issue seems to have stopped.

Hey there, first time Openwrt-er here.

Set up a pair of these with Openwrt 25.12.4 over the weekend. Using the second as a dumb ethernet AP in an 802.11s mesh to bridge them (over 6ghz).

Only trouble I've had is that the WAN has dropped out on it a few times in a few days now, requiring a reboot of the primary router. Any idea what i might change to fix that?

I suppose I've also had trouble getting Moonlight to detect my Sunshine server on the local network, but I'm still skeptical that's a router problem rather than an issue with the machine running Sunshine.

I have no clue honestly, mine has now been up 40days solid without a single drop of connection and 40 days ago it was a firmware upgrade. Its all been remarkably stable and consistent. I haven't heard of others reporting reconnection issues at all with this device and firmware and certainly not regular reboots since it seems to reconnect after the ISPs downtime.

Check the logs and see if you can find anything that goes along with the failure, otherwise there isn't much to go on.

Hm, the only thing I see in the logs is that the drops seem like they might be prone to occur around the time of a DHCP renewal. I don't see any notable errors or warnings in the log, though

Another thing of note is that the drops often do not require a full reboot, but just may be down for 1-5 minutes before wan restores on its own. But drops seem more prone the longer the router goes without a reboot.

Maybe I'll try running a software package update and see if that helps.

Hello, thanks for this. I tried myself but then my BT8 is in a bootloop. I also installed "bridger" as it's just a L2 dumb AP. Any idea why I have this bootloop ? if I disable wed, then it boot again

Maybe missing/misconfigured WO firmware? You should not get a bootloop from enabling WED. w1700k is another target you may need to look for WED help (same 7996).

I think MLO support varies widely among different manufacturers, and at best, it's very rough.

I didn't test it but hey, i'm happy to try on wireshark, you can DM me with procedure of what you'd like me to test (I know wireshark well) please AMA.

You are on bleeding edge (for openwrt) hardware. I would do as instructed and get a serial cable to find out what is going on. All BT8 units should have a presoldered jumper so serial should be easy. Check wiki for pics and instructions. Enabling WED should not cause a bootloop.
